Anatomical Throat Models for Realistic APSD Testing Available from AB FIA

These originates from the work1 of a consortium (known as “OPC” hence OPC Throats) of companies (AstraZeneca, GlaxoSmithKline, and Sanofi-Aventis) who launched three throat models (Small, Medium, and Large). These selected geometries are based on a data set consisting of numerous MRI scans of adults’ throats during inhalation through different mouthpieces. They were chosen because they filter doses in a representative way for different inhalers such as pMDI, DPI, and Nebulizers.

Studies2 showed that the amount of drug passing through these models matches the amount reaching the lungs in-vivo. By comparing the doses that get through the OPC models, you can estimate how much drug reaches the lungs in human subjects.

The throat models can be used upstream with various dose collection equipment like cascade impactors, laser diffraction instruments, particle counters, or with an absolute filter, depending on the scope.

The throats are sold as separate products, please specify which model you want according to the article number.
